LAP X ST. BARK ADOPTION AND CHARITY EVENT
SKYPOST:  LAP Adoption Sunday, 15 dogs waiting for new homes

Lifelong Animal Protection Charity (LAP) and St.Bark co-hosted an adoption day and charity sale at Private i Concept Store on 2 June 2019.

St.Bark also had LAP’s slogan “ Making a Difference: It’s What We Do” embroidered on our functional anti-UV bandanas made of eco-friendly fabric, which were handmade by a local social enterprise. All proceeds made from the sale of the bandanas went to LAP.

About LAP

LAP is solely operated by volunteers, welcomes fund raising and donation that contributes to the daily necessities for animals in the homing centers. LAP strongly encourages NOT to cage up any animals, who should have the freedom to walk with the similar kinds in the adoption centers, just like a temporary home.

It turns out that not only do humans need sunscreen, our furry friends may also need it too-especially breeds with shorter hair. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of sun protection for pets, you can start by referring to the four methods below.

Animals with short hair are particularly prone to sunburn

As the weather starts to warm up, we can become sunburnt and red after doing outdoor activities and being exposed to the bright sun. Our furry friends can experience the same. Areas on their body which are pink and uncovered by hair, for example on the front of their ears, nose, lips, abdomen, etc, are the most vulnerable to sunburn. Some breeds with shorter hair, such as Shar-Pei and Canadian hairless cats, are more susceptible to sunburn. Their sunburned skin can become inflamed and swollen, and accumulated sunburn damage over time can cause skin infections.

Keanu, who has worked as a veterinarian for more than 10 years, said Hong Kong's sunshine is not as powerfully damaging compared to other countries. If you are a pet owner determined to go out for a walk at noon, you can use the following four practices to protect your furry friend from UV rays.

1Sun Protection Clothing

The so-called sun protection clothing is actually a thin layer of clothing. Without making the pet feel stuffy or hot, it can block the direct exposure of ultraviolet rays to vulnerable parts of the body such as the abdomen, reducing the change of sunburn.

2Sun Hat

The face is the most unprotected part of pets, which is where the sun hat comes in extremely handy! The anti-UV hat can prevent the direct exposure of sunlight on the face, effectively protecting your furry friends's eye from ultraviolet light damage.

3Sun Protection Tent

If you don't think the sun protection clothes and hats are enough, you can even buy sun protection tents for your pet! There are foldable sunscreen tents on the market that are light and easy to carry. During outings, furry friends can hide inside the shaded tents so they don't get sunburned at all.

4Sunscreen Products

Sunscreen is our most common method of human sun protection. Did you know that pets can also use sunscreen? Keanu the veterinarian said that since certain ingredients such as zinc oxide and octyl salicylate in human sunscreen are harmful to pets if ingested, and that pets often lick their own bodies, pet owners should not apply sunscreen for humans on pets.

There are also some sunscreens for pets on the market in many forms such as cream, spray and wipes. No matter which pet sunscreen you choose for your pet, it is always best to consult your veterinarian first.
